Sacramento's Water Wolves sent three swimmers to the Western Zone meet in Seattle last August. All three girls-Holly Thompson, 17; Brandie Cargill, 17; and Caroline Yarber, 10-swam best times at zones. Brandie swam on two zone record-breaking relays and placed second and third in the 100 and 200 back, respectively. Caroline swam best times and finished 11th and 15th in the 200 and 100 free. Patriot Aquatic Club's relay, consisting of three 14year-olds and one 15-year-old won the 800 free relay at the Illinois Senior State Championship meet, hosted by Lake Forest Swim Club in July. Jill Bergman, Kristi Westrich, Morgan Kautz and Kristin Kuchel combined to swim 8:, just shy of a senior national time.
Kentucky
The Kenton County Clippers of Taylor Mill, Ky., recently finished third at the Ohio Long Course Junior Olympics meet held July 30-Aug. 2 at Cincinnati's Keating Natatorium. The Clippers were led by "Swimmer of the Meet" Sean Pharr (11-12 boys) and Michael Day (13-14 boys). Clippers' head coach, Jeff Stewart, was named Ohio Age Group Coach of the Year.
Pharr recorded eight NAG Top 16 times and won eight of the ten races in which he competed. He lowered a 27-year-old mark in the 50 meter fly (). Day lowered a meet record in the 400 IM (4:) and recorded NAG times in the 100-200 fly. One week later at the Central Zone Championships, Day was able to better the LSC record in the 200 fly (2:). He had just missed the mark at the Junior Olympics, coming within 37-hundredths.
Maryand
Chesapeake Bay Aquatic Club hosted the Second Annual Sunfest Open Water Swim in Ocean City Sept. 26. About 300 swimmers from Maryland, virginia, Delaware and Pennsylvania competed.
For the second straight year, Mt. Pleasant Swimming's Julie Galan, 15, won the 1K. Rich Shinnick, Bel Air Aquatic Club's swim coach, placed second and Jason Kapit, 14, of RMSC was third. Navy swept the 3K competition with 16-year-old Lindsay Mathwick and 14-year-olds Jason Villemez and Bronwen Price finish-- ing 1-2-3. Josh Farley, 16, of NBAC won the 5K with Matt Zuiderhof, 17, of CBAC placing second and Lisa Stasivlewicz, 17, of Retrievers placing third.
Michigan
The Ann Arbor Swim Club YMCA won the Michigan Long Course State Championship in August. The meet was held at the Eastern Michigan University's Michael H. Jones Natatorium in Ypsilanti. The team scored a total of 800 points. The women's 800 free relay of Stephanie Szopo, Casey Nicholson, Kristen Tinney and Brianna Kloote qualified for junior nationals. Wendy Shieh won the high-point award for 11-12 girls, swimming 1: in the 100 fly.
Josh Hack swam a 1: in the boys 15-and-over 100 breast. Zayd Ma won the 15-and-over 200 fly in a personal best by eight seconds (2:).
New York
Star Swimming won the Niagara Long Course Junior Olympics with a total of 3,918 points-outscoring the combined totals of the second and third place teams. Mark Rubin set Niagara
records in the 11-12 boys 50 free (), 100 free (), 200 free (2:), 400 free (4:), 50 fly () and 100 fly (1:). Star's 13-14 girls relay of Lara Eastmer, Ginger Miller, Rachael Rubin and Marie Wolbert collected two Niagara marks in the 400 (4:) and 800 (9:) free relays. Thirty-five Star swimmers placed in the top eight in at least one of their events.
Colorado
Almost exactly four years ago, Colorado Springs Swim Team's 10-and-under girls relay had their picture published in American Relay. Last summer, the four girls - all still with Colorado Springs - were reunited at Junior Nationals-West. Swimming together again were (from left) Jenn Beiner, Anna Trinidad, Holly Leigh and Lisa Pursley.
Texas
Blue Tide Aquatics of Houston recently recorded their highest finish ever at this year's long course Texas Age Group Swimming Championships by placing third. Blue Tide had many outstanding swimmers, including three swimmers who won individual state championships. Audrey Gardner (10&U girls) captured the 100 fly, Brittany Lentz (11-12 girls) took the 400 free and Kevin Williamson (11-12 boys) was victorious in the 100 fly and 200 IM. The 10&U girls relay of Karyl Maulfair, Lexie Shue, Melissa Hain and Gardner won the 200 medley relay in a national reportable 2:.
Blue Tide placed six swimmers on the Gulf Swimming team which competed at the Southern Zone Championships. Lentz, Williamson, Molly Muck, . Alvarez, Justin Whitaker and Andy Gardner. All six finaled, highlighted by Whitaker's win in the 100 back (1:). The Gulf team finished in third, their highest placing ever.
