It all started with Gracie, an albino Great Dane, the runt in a litter of giants. She was blind in one eye, completely deaf, and as white and sweet as snow ice cream. But her ribs stuck out like Popsicle sticks because she wouldn't touch her food.
Poor Gracie turned down table scraps and the finest dog food her masters could buy. Even the vets were stumped. As a last resort, her owners tried cooking, a task they'd hardly accomplished for themselves. After burning many biscuits (and their own paws), they created a tasty peanut butter treat from whole wheat, molasses, and other "human" foods. That biscuit, christened the Bark 'n Fetch, proved to be Gracie's salvation and the birth of a business.
Today there are more than 200 treats on the menu at Three Dog Bakery, which maintains its flagship store in Kansas City's Country Club Plaza. From Pupcakes to Great Danishes, these gourmet confections are nothing to shake a stick at. Founders Dan Dye and Mark Beckloff insist on using all-natural "people food." Made with whole grains and fresh vegetables, the results look good enough to eat-and are.
I tested the the Lick 'n Crunch Sandwich Cookies, which are baked with carob (dogs shouldn't have chocolate) and filled with vanilla cream or peanut butter, on my mother's fastidious miniature Yorkie. Tchotchke ate two-a triumph. Then my father and grandmother polished off the whole box.
