City Children Love 'Fresh Air' When Chairie and Brian Leedy of Lebanon decided to host 11-year-old Maciel "Mariel" Torres of Manhattan last summer through the Fresh Air Fund's Friendly Town Program, they thought it might take a while for Mariel and themselves to settle in. That was not the case, however.

For true dog people, this assurance replenishes hope and makes life more bearable. For non-dog people, it's sappy nonsense, but you wouldn't want this crowd for your friends anyway.
True dog lovers humanize their companions without shame. They are their dogs' ventriloquists and mind readers, as well as parents, entertainers, waiters, nurses and fetchers. Indeed, their loyalty to their dogs approaches their dogs' fidelity to them. True dog lovers are always in one of two states: either happy their dogs are with them, or wishing they were, because the presence of a dog improves almost any situation. For instance, I attend trade shows that the organizational talents of a border collie would improve markedly. Mistakes I make at BN are, no doubt, for want of an office beagle to sniff them out.
Any place that accommodates dogs gets five stars in my book. The Super 8 Motel in Seward, Nebraska, once gave my Labs Argus and Chuck and me their Hawaiian suite--which consisted mostly of palm thatching stapled to the walls and posters of Diamond Head--and it was a cozier night's stay than any I've had at the Ritz-Carlton. Years ago, the Bluebird Cafe outside Telluride, Colorado, was the Friday night gathering spot for women, men, children and their many dogs. The scene always evoked ancient times when the tribe settled beside the fire.
These days, though, urbanized humans live mostly in isolation, whereas dogs remain steadfast to the Boy Scout-like ideal of pack and den. Dogs are thus quite old-fashioned in adhering to the bonds of community and the sacrifice it requires. Although tree dog lovers play many roles, in learning to accept the contradictions of Homo sapiens, they remain students to their canine masters.
In this issue, Ann Martin--the Rachel Carson of pet foods--tells you about some of the healthiest natural products for your dogs and cats. Her revelations may startle you, and might even change what you put in your beloved canine or feline companion's dish. To paraphrase St. Bernard: Feed yourself right, feed your dog right.
